Why septa fail in normal daily use
I have watched a lot of septa fail in ways that had nothing to do with the septum itself. A lab calls and says the septa are bad because the GC is showing ghost peaks, or the HPLC is losing pressure, or the autosampler is coring needles. Nine times out of ten, the septum is doing exactly what the wrong septum does in that application. The rest of the time it is damaged on installation, over-torqued, run past its temperature rating, or punched far more times than the material can survive. Th...

What a septum actually does, and why it fails
I still keep a shoebox of failed septa under my desk. Every one of them cost somebody a run: a double-injection from a coring problem on a 96-well plate, a ghost peak at 11.2 minutes traced to a bleed-heavy silicone disc, a vial that vented solvent into a tray because the cap was torqued to 28 in-lb on a 9 mm thread. That box is the reason I now treat septa as a specification, not a commodity line item. The part costs cents; the data it protects costs thousands. This guide is what I wish so...

What a septa actually has to do
I have watched a septa ruin a run in three different ways in the same week: a coring event that dropped a rubber plug into a GC inlet, a silicone disc that bled enough siloxane to bury a trace sulfur peak, and a cap that somebody over-torqued until the PTFE face split along the injection point. None of these were exotic failures. They were the same four or five mistakes I see every quarter, and they all cost more in lost instrument time than the septa cost to replace. This article is what I...
